Setting Up the Perfect Media Server
A great home media server is not a single product — it is an assembly of well-chosen parts that quietly works for years. This guide walks through the decisions we make at Rustyt when commissioning a new media estate for a client.
1. Pick your platform
The three serious choices today are Plex, Emby and Jellyfin. Plex is the most polished and the easiest for non-technical family members. Emby sits in the middle. Jellyfin is fully open-source with no paid tier — ideal if you want to own every part of the stack.
2. Hardware that lasts
For most homes we recommend an Intel N100 or N305 mini-PC with at least 16 GB of RAM, paired with a dedicated NAS (Synology, QNAP or a custom TrueNAS box) for storage. Intel's Quick Sync gives you hardware transcoding for 4K HEVC without the noise or power draw of a discrete GPU.
3. Storage strategy
Use a dedicated array for media (ZFS or BTRFS RAID), a small SSD for the OS, and a separate SSD for metadata and transcoding cache. Never mix your media pool with your application data — it makes upgrades and restores far easier.
4. The *arr suite
Sonarr, Radarr, Lidarr and Readarr automate the discovery, downloading and naming of content. Pair them with Prowlarr as a single indexer manager and Bazarr for subtitles. Run everything in Docker so upgrades are trivial.
5. Remote access, safely
Expose Plex/Jellyfin via Tailscale or a Cloudflare Tunnel rather than opening ports on your router. You get the same external playback without the security risk.
6. Backups
Follow the 3-2-1 rule. Configurations, metadata databases and watch history are tiny but priceless — back them up nightly to a second disk and weekly to off-site storage.
